Hydroclimatic extremes contribute to asymmetric trends in ecosystem productivity loss

چکیده
Abstract Gross primary production is the basis of global carbon uptake. losses are often related to hydroclimatic extremes such as droughts and heatwaves, but trend driven by remains unclear. Using observationally-constrained process-based model data from 1982-2016, we show that drought-heat events, drought-cold heatwaves dominant drivers gross loss. Losses associated with these increase in northern midlatitude ecosystem decrease pantropical ecosystems, thereby contributing around 70% variability total losses. These asymmetric trends caused an magnitude midlatitudes a frequency loss events ecosystems. Our results suggest pantropics may have become less vulnerable over recent decades whereas more closely entangled.

Asymmetric responses of primary productivity to precipitation extremes: A synthesis of grassland precipitation manipulation experiments.
Climatic changes are altering Earth's hydrological cycle, resulting in altered precipitation amounts, increased interannual variability of precipitation, and more frequent extreme precipitation events. These trends will likely continue into the future, having substantial impacts on net primary productivity (NPP) and associated ecosystem services such as food production and carbon sequestration....
متن کاملNutrient enrichment, biodiversity loss, and consequent declines in ecosystem productivity.
Anthropogenic drivers of environmental change often have multiple effects, including changes in biodiversity, species composition, and ecosystem functioning. It remains unknown whether such shifts in biodiversity and species composition may, themselves, be major contributors to the total, long-term impacts of anthropogenic drivers on ecosystem functioning. Moreover, although numerous experiment...
متن کاملProductivity responses of a widespread marine piscivore, Gadus morhua, to oceanic thermal extremes and trends
Climate change will have major consequences for population dynamics and life histories of marine biota as it progresses in the twenty-first century. These impacts will differ in magnitude and direction for populations within individual marine species whose geographical ranges span large gradients in latitude and temperature. Here we use meta-analytical methods to investigate how recruitment (i....

Hydrologic regime is highly dependent on climate change, as hydrologic cycle components are directly influenced by climatic conditions. This paper analyzes the impacts of climate change on the hydrologic regime of the Atrak River basin in the northeast of Iran. It drains to the Caspian Sea. The data collected at 11 hydrometeorological stations were examined to detect trends in hydroclimatologic...
